Hello, I was recently given a 1988 8hp johnson that is frozen. The fly wheel doesn't even budge a little, completely stuck! The person who gave it to me said it hasn't run for about 8yrs.It ran good then, but was stored on a dock on the salt water and hasn't been touched since I took it home.I took the head off and there is a coating of rust/gunk on the cylinder walls. With a little cleaning it has come off the area I tested the cleaner on.I am wondering if anyone has ever tried to disasemble and clean a motor with this problem with any success? Everything else on the motor is in good shape and appears to be fine.I just can't stand to let this motor go to waste!! Any suggestions would be appreciated!! Thanks Koter

Re: 1988 8hp frozen

Koter, get a spray can of Deep Creep from a auto parts place and soak the piston tops with it. Keep applying and soaking for a couple days. Then use a socket on the flywheel nut and try to move it clockwise (don't force it, now) I have freed several 'stuck' motors this way. Hopefully yours is just locked from sitting, and not an overheat or too much corrosion. If the bores look OK, further disassembly will hopefully not be needed. Use a new headgasket, and run it at break-in mix (25:1) at first to be gentle on the expensive bits. Do the impeller while you're at it. Good luck!

i did the same process with my 1982 90hp johnny and was succesful. i used pb blaster and liquid wrench and some elbow grease. be sure and clean the cylinders out as good as possible if it frees up becuase if you get it started you do not want any junk in the cyliders. use the fuel mixture stated by the other response and maybe check other compnents like:
1.water pump
2.carbs(re-build)
3.thermostats
4.wires & fuel lines
5.lower unit oil
all of these components will most likely need attention after 8yrs of sitting in the weather. Good luck and remember, patience pays!!

Koter,
You might want to remove the lower unit first. There is a remote chance that the lower unit is locked up. You'll want to remove the lower unit for an impeller replacement anyway, That's a long time just sitting! Good Luck..keep us posted.

1 more thought for what its worth.

I would lay it down on the ground, Carb pointing up, and dump allot of P.B Blaster or some type of penatrating oil in through the carb. and let it set several days before trying to turn fly wheel.

The reason being to lube the crank shaft and push rod bearings and help the seals to re-swell.

Best of luck, but if you have to tear it down and rebuild it, your in for an enjoyable experiance if you buy the manual and take your time.

More than likely there is internal rust and simply freeing up the motor and trying to run it will result in a catastrophic shut down. If it were mine, I'd get a shop manual and tear it down. For the cost of some gaskets, sealer and bearings, you might get a good reliable motor out of it. Keep in mind that your motor has aluminum connecting rods with steel sleeves at the cranskhaft end and pressed-in steel bearings at the wrist-pin end. Aluminum rods can bend fairly easily if you try to torque the flywheel too much to free up the pistons. As it is the motor doesn't work. Taking it apart won't hurt it and you may end up with a better motor in the long run... Take out the crankshaft, punch out the pistons with a press (if needed) and go from there...
- Scott
