1961 75hp johnson shift problems

hello,<br /><br />i am buying a boat that has a 1961 75 hp johnson that apparently "starts right up" but will not shift gears. it has new control and cable. is this hard to fix and is it worth it?<br /><br />thank you,<br />doris

If it is a manual shift it is fairly simple to<br />adjust and repair.Professional repairs could be<br />costly if major repairs are required.<br /> These old motors are generally considered pretty<br />reliable but ignition parts are hard to find and<br />expensive. The electric shift Can be very problematic.The early V4s are horrible gas hogs.

hello again,<br />thank you for your help. my understanding is that it is a manual shift. What does it entail to fix it. do i have to remove the entire lower unit? please advise.<br /><br />doris
