Well i have an 85 evinrude 140 that recently has a new power pack and regulator and diconnected the vro so i mix the gas in the tank now. Well it runs great but has a little bit of a problem idling like it's too low in neutral but will die if i just put it in gear and putz around or go to dock..like it's loading up and i have to restart it with the throttle up and clean it out and jam it into gear and then it's fine. This motor is also not charging but i have to do dva voltage tests on the yellow wires from the stator yet..but voltage stays at 12.5 currently. And if this sounds like a carb rebuild problem is this motor a looper or crossflow? Has like 2-two barrell carbs separeted vertical from starboard to port side...also running champion ql78-yc plugs..
Thanks for any help at all
-Bri

Re: 85 140 won't stay running in gear

Kerpit.... The 1985 140hp Evinrude is a Loop Charged engine. It has four (4) single barrel carburetors which feed the cyls in a "X" pattern ie top starboard carb feeds top port cyl.

The spark plugs should be Champion QL77JC4 plugs with the gap set to .040 (not the plugs you state).

On a flushette, the idle in neutral should be set to 1200 rpm for a 20" shaft length engine. The rpms will drop to normal when in the water due to exhaust back pressure.

Compression should be 100+ psi and even on all cyls. Spark, with plugs out, should jump a 7/16" gap on all cyls with a strong blue lightning like flame.

If the compression and spark checks out okay, and if you still have a problem, the usual cause is fouled carburetors.

Note that if the charging system is not functioning, the voltage will back up in the stator which is the beginning of the charging and ignition system. This causes overheating of the stator which in turn causes the stator to crack and melt down. This melt down results in a voltage drop from the stator to the powerpack, which in turn causes the powerpack to be intermitent or fail to energize altogether.

Thanks a million joe!!! I looked at the carbs last night and they are 4 single barrels...i was looking at maybe the intake it would be..i ordered carb rebuild kits cause it's never been done so i figure it wouldn't hurt..another question though..i have fuel sitting in the carbs before the butterflys and in the cover of the carbs..the bottom had fuel in there when i took it off..why is this???
thanks
-Bri

That happens at times due to having the engine tilted, driving down a road with a few bumps, rough water when docked, etc. When you rebuild the carbs, pay attention to the float levels as follows.

(Carburetor Float Setting)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Re: 85 140 won't stay running in gear

I just torn the carbs off like an hour ago and the float levels look pretty good..i figures one would be low flooding the carbs out..it actually looks like just oil and some was even sitting in the small orifices..but i figured as soon as it was fired up and had vacuum it would pull through..this thing runs awesome but just won't run for long if u just engage it in gear..no extra throttle..this thing had a no start condition for awhile before when i had the vro hooked up so i was wondering if there is a ton of oil sitting in the crankcase..but the plugs look great..if anything too lean..
