I have a 1986 60hp Evinrudeon my boat that starts and idles great and works well up to about 1/4 throttle, any more than that and the engine will bog down and eventually quit(I've tried chocking it while opening up the throttle and this immediately shuts the engine down. Now thats the problem, please let me explain the events that led upto this (because the motor ran absolutely perfect upto this).During a freak storm the boat broke loose, turned sideways and got swamped(this all happened while tied offshore,so the motor was never submerged).Anyways after a lot of bailing I finally got the boat to the point where I could start it and take it back to the dock and load it onto the traler. It was while doing this that I first discovered the above problem. What I discovered after I put the boat back onto the trailer was that the oil tank was about half full of water. I've drained the oil, cleaned the tank, refilled it with new oil, purged the line going upto the motor.I've replaced the gasoline in the tank, I've had the sparkplugs out(they were a nice brown color , although not completely dry), I cleaned them and put back in.
I checked fuel filter it appears good and clean. All this to no avail ,any ideas guys?? I've run out! I'm convinced the problem is a simple one, however it appears that at least for this I'm the simple one.

Steve,

The 3-cylinder loopers can be very sensative to carburetor issues.

I would recommend a thorough carb. rebuild. Also, make sure the "synch. and link" operation is performed correctly.

With the help of the very friendly and knowledgable staff of Performance Marine (located here in Edmonton) I have fixed the problem I was having with my outboard. It turns out that when the boat turned in the storm it allowed sand and debri to go in behind the prop and thus block off the exhaust.I removed the prop sprayed out the exhaust tube with a pressure washer, replaced prop , fired it up and it now runs like it is suppose to.Apparently this a fairly common occurence and they have several customers a year with this very same problem. I hope this helps somebody else down the road and spares them headaches this has caused me. I would like to thank djohns 19 for taking the time to try and help a land locked stubble jumper. If any good has come out of this experience it is, that have found a very interesting and valuable web site.

Hmm I have had the same problem with my 92 Johnson 60 Horse... I replaced the lower unit recently.... I will have to give this a try. Maybe with luck this is all it is :)
