I have just acquired a Johnson 4 with the serial Numbers # 04380882 and Model # 4R76M. Can anyone tell me what year this is and what is the proper steps to timing it and what oil ratio should I use.
Thanks
rmole

Re: Johnson 4

Personally, I would run the little 4s on a 40:1 or 32:1 mix, as they have bronze/aluminum bearings on the crank and wrist pin ends of the con-rod. The only steel bearing is the upper main. I've got a LOT of blown 4hp blocks with holes in them due to the 50:1 mix. Far better to err on the side of caution.... they're good little motors - very smooth running and quiet.
- Scott

Thanks for your help. I'll definitely change the oil ratio. Now I'm looking for the inlet hole for the the lowergear box. I found the drain hole.
Thanks Again
Rmole

Re: Johnson 4

Rich,
You can stop looking, it should have only one lower unit drain screw. You drain and fill from that one screw.

Re: Johnson 4

Hi
I found the drain hole for my 76 Johnson 4 and drained the oil. There was only a small amount drained out. I then funneled in fresh lube. It was full in a matter of seconds. Am I putting in wrong or what?
Rich

Let it drain overnight and refill in the morning. They don't hold much!

Re: Johnson 4

rmole....do you know which lower unit you have? If it's sorta bent downward, it's the weedless drive and will have a vent plug screw. If the gear case just sticks straight out, this is the standard drive and will have only one plug.
