88 spl johnson water pump installation

I got the really sweet running 92 88spl that the previous owner said needed a pump. He included a new kit with the deal. I don't have a manual yet but want to put it in water now. I got the foot loose and put the shifter in reverse and that dropped the foot a few inches. Anyone know what I got to do next??

Focker....<br /><br />What ya' need to do is get the shift rod lose. The retaining screw is just below and aft of the bottom carb. You can get at it from the port side of the engine. Use a 1/4 inch socket set with a universal joint to get at the screw. Might wanna' pull up the lowe unit until the shift rod is lose. Shifting into reverse helps make the screw reachable.
