I have a 1995 Johnson 90hp, mod# J90TLEOR. Went fishing yesturday & idleing up to my second spot the motor died. Waited 10 min & it started up. Ran to a couple other spots & it did the same thing on the 4th spot. I waited & again it started up. This hapened once before about a month ago but only once. Now in the driveway it took awhile but I got it to die idleing. Now it dosent start at all. It has no spark. The motor is not getting hot. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ron

Ron..... Remove the s/plugs. Check the spark. If no spark, disconnect the large RED main electrical plug at the engine.

Check the spark again by using a small jumper from the battery cable side of the solenoid to the small 3/8" nut on the solenoid that energizes the solenoid (not the ground 3/8" nut).

If you now have spark, replace the ignition switch as it is developing an intermitent short between the two "M" terminals.

--------------

Should you have spark at the beginning of this test and can not get the spark to cease at the time, on your next trip do the following:

If you can get at the back of the ignition switch easily, remove the black/yellow wire from it. If the switch is in a control box (hard to get at), remove that black/yellow wire at the powerpack (the one leading from the engine wiring harness to the pack). This eliminates the kill circuit leading to the ignition switch. If the problem is now non existent, consider the ignition switch faulty.

Note that with this black/yellow wire disconnected, it will be impossible to kill the engine with the ignition switch.

Ron.... If you did exactly what I said, and no spark was observed, unfortunately the usual loss of spark cause is a failed powerpack.

It would be a good idea to check all of the pin and socket connections first though as one may have broke, become dirty or loose (it happens).

That was one of the first things I did. I checked all the conections today when it died. Was hoping for a chafed wire or lose/bad conection. Sounds like I need to order a new/used? powerpack unless their is another test to confirm. Thanks again for the quick response, I realy do apreciate your time & advise. Ron

Closer to dark I can see a spark every once & a while but with no consistency with red plug unpluged. Did not try with it pluged together. Thanks, Ron

I ran a test on the stator with an ohm meter & have no reading on the two wires. Does this mean the stator is gone? The only spark i have is weak & inconsistant. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ron

Ron.... It does sound like the stator has failed. Without actually being there, it's difficult to be acturate but your description of the problem would make me lean in that direction.

The cost of the powerpack is not a waste of money as It's a splendid idea to keep one of those in your tool kit along with the proper tools needed to change it.

Thanks Joe! I will keep the new powerpack on. Do you think its a good idea to replace the rectifier also with the stator? Thanks again, Ron

Ron..... Only replace a rectifier if it's faulty. If it's a water cooled regulator/rectifier type, you'll need a manual to check it. If it's the small three (3) wire type, the following procedure would be the one to use.

(Small Rectifier Test)

Remove the rectifier wires from the terminal block. Using a ohm meter, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the rectifier base (ground), then one by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, then the red wire (some rectifiers may also have a yellow/blue wire. If so connect to that also). Now, reverse the ohm meter leads and check those same wires again. You should get a reading in one direction, and none at all in the other direction.

Now, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the red wire. One by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, and if present, the yellow/blue wire. Then reverse the leads, checking the wires again. Once more, you should get a reading in one direction and none in the other.

Note that the reading obtained from the red rectifier wire will be lower then what is obtained from the other wires.

Any deviation from the "Reading", "No Reading" as above indicates a faulty rectifier.

Joe, shes running again. One question. It dosent seem to have a real strong holeshot. No skiping just a slow acceleration. Once on plane it flies. It wasent this bad before. It idles strong out of the water but will idle down in the water. I am puting a tach on it this weekend to get some #s. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated

Ron....outboards will idle strong out of the water because of no backpressure against the cylinders that you would get with the engine in the water.

Check the high end timing and make sure it's where it should be.

Thanks OutboardJim. Can the timing change when you replace the stator? Thanks, Ron
