Bought a small runabout w/1966 80 hp. Johnson electrashift. Have gotten shop manual (thanks to this forum). When I bought it someone had already rebuilt carb., new distrib.,new plugs, new coil, new silenoid, new gas lines. I have put in new impeller, cleaned out old gas and replaced with new, rebuilt fuel pump, new battery, Starter didn't sound healthy from the start and eventually burned up @ the neg. brush side. I took the starter to someone to rebuild( couldn't find brushes to fit because so old, had them made). This didn't help it did it again. Bought a used starter, did it again, fixed brushes and did it again. Does anyone know where the short may be coming from. Ground connection at battery fine, all readings at silenoid are fine, schematic suggests maybe ignition switch or a capacitor that comes in after gen. but I can't find where it goes from there.

Re: Whats burning up starter?

By now, you might think it's probably not the starter, ED.

It could be not enough voltage getting to the starter motor under load.

Measure the voltage at the starter terminal when engaged. It should not be below 11 volts.

Measure the voltage from input to output of the solenoid when the starter is engaged. It should not exceed 1.2 volts. If it does, replace it.

If the starter voltage is low, check out all heavy cables and wires and their connections. Then remove the starter and carefully clean all surfaces where it meets the engine block.

If that doesn't bring it up, upgrade the size of your battery and starter cables.

Let us know what you find. :)

Is the starter gear releasing from the ring gear after starting or is the starter running on with the motor?
If it is running on it will most certainly burn it out.
