Re: Johnson 40 VRO

Welcome to the iboats forum, VRO.

There has been many threads on the pros and cons of the VRO pump. Use the search function at the top of the page and search for VRO. You should get all the info your looking for.

I will tell you this, make absolutely sure the alarms that are associated with the VRO system work. If in doubt, run a 50:1 gas mix in your fuel tank until you know the the pump is using oil by putting level marks on the reservoir.

One last thing. Look at the wire harness coming from the VRO pump. If it has four wires, that is a newer pump. Having a manual for the engine would be nice to. It will tell you how to care and test the components on the engine if ya' need to.

Re: Johnson 40 VRO

Most VRO related failures are due to lack of maintenence and not the pump itself. Water in the oil tank, cracked oil lines, loose fittings, ect. Generally, they are reliable if maintained. Drain the tank each spring and refill with fresh oil. Check ALL the oil lines from the tank to the motor. As OBJ said, make sure the alarms are working and verify that the pump IS working by running pre-mix along WITH the VRO for the first tank of gas. That being said, I still prefer to mix my own. But that's just me. Done it for years and it's a hard habit to break.
