Motor stalls Fuel pump, VRO or Both?

Re: Motor stalls Fuel pump, VRO or Both?

I guess the reason I'm so stuck on the pump is from the first post. He said it would only run when he pumped the bulb and then died soon after. Plus, it overheated. That tells me there must have been a failure of the entire pump, both fuel and oil side. Or failure after the pump to the carbs(Hoses)

Rick, I tend to agree with you on the whole thing being shot. If I understand how it is supposed to work If I plug the oil intake to the VRO and then run the motor with premixed fuel, won't the fuel side still draw fuel to the motor if it works. If it continues to stall wouldn't that indicate that the fuel side is bad too? I/m guessing that I would have to plug the oil line to avoid any vacuum being created by that side drawing no oil. Am I correct?
Klog

That may very well be the case Rick.As Solittle asks,is the engine now running fine with premix or does the alarm continue to sound or engine die?If the engine still has running issues with the premix I'd say that the diaphragm in the vro unit is kaput or the pulse hose from the crankcase has developed a leak.

The engine continues to die after 2 to 3 minutes even with the premix. The alarm does not sound at this point. After it dies, if I pump the fuel bulb back up, it fires right up and runs for 2 to 3 minutes.

As a sidelight does anyone have an idea where I could get a VRO for this old motor?

Yes, pull the oil line and plug it. Alarm may go off cause it will (Should) sense low oil. As djohns19 said, it could still be a restriction somewhere, too. Try a portable tank to narrow it down even more. If it dies from lack of fuel with the line capped and on the portable tank, I would have to replace the pump if it were me.

Thank you all for your help
I'll try some of this tomorrow and maybe narrow it down a little more. With the oil line plugged and a small tank of premix I guess we can eliminate most of the variables and then go from there.
Thanks again
KLOG

If you disconnect and plug the oil inlet to the vro pump, disconnect the three wire harness at it amphenol plug or the alarms will drive you batty.Unplugging the harness will not effect the operation of the overheat alarm.Just insure that you have 50:1 mix in the fuel tank .

If needed:

Pump

They have the original pump, 4-wire pump or just fuel pump, if you decide to pre-mix from now on. Let us know what happens.

if you dont want to do the VRO thing see if this premix pump will work for you #438402 @ $150 to $160.
or try DFI Technologies, if you send them your vro they will up grade it to a newer more reliable pump @ $150.

The pump and upgrade kit to a 4 wire system is part number 5004559.

Re: Motor stalls Fuel pump, VRO or Both?

Update
I purchased a new 4 wire VRO pump and switched it out today. Replaced the fuel filter while I was in there. It wasn't as difficult as I had feared, just a little cramped. The location of the bolts that hold down the VRO mounting bracket could have been placed better. The top one runs up against the starter bracket, making it impossible for it to come off without removing the starter bracket. However, I was able to loosen it enough to tilt it out and get to it anyway.
I fired her up and it ran for 10 minutes without shutting off, no overheating and I was able to advance the throttle with no stalling.
The true test will come tomorrow when I take her out on the water for a while to make sure that the oil level is going down. (indicating that the VRO is working correctly and that I can stop premixing.)
Thanks for all of your help and information.
Klog

Good for you klog.Bare in mind that the waterpump and t/stat needs replacing every 2-3 years depending on the hours of use.Best to catch these things before they wear out.
