I got my 1968 55hp evinrude running and seem to have only one problem left, now it's missfiring. It missfires at idle back and forth between the #1 and #2 wires. It sparks against the flywheel coming out of the sparkplug boot. I have new wires, plugs, distributor (used put on by mechanic), points, wiring, amplifier, rectifier, sylenoid. It seems to have recently started this but can't be positive. I do know it has only just started doing it in idle. It did used to do it only after running it for a period of time.
Also my starter seems to get awful hot (it's newly rebuilt), is this not a problem in itself and would it effect the spark?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

Re: evinrude missfires

condensor wire might be sticking up and engaging the flywheel.

The hot starter is probably due to corroded connections or bad wires.

Soggy Britches.....I'd take it back to the mech and tell him to take a look. Ya' could have a hairline crack in the distributer (used). If the starter is rebuilt and the brushes are the type that need soldered in, there could be a "cold" solder on the brush lead causing it to draw more amprege than needed to turn the engine. This will cause the starter to heat up.

Ok here's what was wrong. Would you beleive that one of the floats was stuck in one carburetor? I finally pulled the carbs off and checked em and cleard the stuck float and was off and running in less than 30 minutes.
These old outboards ain't so bad to fix once you figure out their warning sings I reckon.
