Pardon my ignorance here, but I am a newbie (greenie?) to the forum. My only experience before is with nothing larger than 5.5hp motor.

I just bought an old 1977 Hustler bass boat with an 1976 Evinrude 55 motor, model# 55673E. An acquaintance at the VFW said that he had owned one, it had given him nothing but problems, and suggested that I get rid of it. However, he said his had three carburetors, and mine only has two that I can see. Reading through all the postings here and at Outboard Motor Repair, it seems that the motor is well regarded (JB and 12footer?). Were there both 2cyl and 3cyl 55s made in the 70s? Also, references are made to running the motor out of water using a garden hose, yet I can't find a connection on mine that would allow this. I would appreciate any advice that can be given on the worth of this model and how to start the engine out of the water.

If I recall correctly I think 1969 or 1970 was the last year of the 3 cyl 55's <--great engine.

The 55 I believe was introduced a few years later 1976?. Unfortunately it was in the form of a 2 cyl, as was the 50hp.

These engine I have found through expirience of doing rebuilds and working on these engines is the life span is cut considerably shorter if the owner pulls tubes and skiers.<--causes them to throw rods through the crankcase.

Super engine for the avid fisherman, but not for the guy who wants to pull.

AS for the garden hose. I am not sure if Iboats sells them..but..you can purchase water muffs. With these you can run your engine with a garden hose.

TMD

Thanks for the info. I'm just planning on using the boat for fishing. It's a shame that there aren't forums as nice as this one for all the other aspects of our lives. I appreciate the help.
