What is the correct way to use a Mooring Bit and Bow Chock?

My boat has a Mooring Bit centrally mounted on the deck with a bow chock at the stem. I use a length of rope with a fixed loop tied on one end and just loop it over the Mooring Bit and lay the rope through the Bow Chock then tie to dock cleat.

Something tells me there is a special way of tying to a Mooring Bit, because my loop of rope falls off too easy. But I need something easy to undo, because I have to be able to reach over the windshield to untie it after casting off. I can just barely touch the Mooring Bit with my fingers when reaching over the windshield.

What's the right way to use this thing?

IF the loop is big enough after you put it over the bit pull back on it until the spice is aginst the bit then twist the remaining part of the loop 180 degrees to form a second loop and flip it forward over the bit. When it is pulled tight you will have two wraps around the bit and it can't come off.

Buttanic

There is a knot called a mooring hitch. It hold tight until you pull on the free end of the rope then it slips out. I picked up some knot cards last night from EMS for a Boy Scout grab bag and the knot is illustrated on the card. I'm sure you can find instructions on tying it on the internet.

Here is a link to how to tie it:
http://www.netknots.com/html/paddling_knots.html
