I have a 1976 Evinrude 200 Hp Outboard. Will not shift into reverse. Tried cable adjustments and not it. Tried manually shifting only grinds and **** level jumps in hand. Tried Lower unit removal for bind ups in shift arm, no it either. It Is a hyrdomatic lower unit? Any suggestions will be welcome as I am stumped and any shop manual I can find has no advice :(

Reverse gear lobes may be severely worn not allowing engagement or shift dawg is worn out.Do you regularly shift slowly or briskly when shifting gears?

I recently purchased the motor so I don't know the history. A strange thing that is throwing me off is that the unit will pre-load and shift into reverse without the motor running without an issue?? Thanks for the speedy response... :)

hell
yes it is very possible to have a hydro-mechanical unit. this unit had a shift assist servo just under the shifter cover and it had a pressure pump similar to the hydro-electrics.
Good luck but it sounds like a dissasembly is next.

Hi Diveschl....

Have you drained the gear lube for a look? If so, what did you see if anything. If not, drain the gear lube and see if there is any metal shavings or "sparklers" in the oil.

Your lower unit indeed has a pump in it. It could be a possibility that the shift shaft is binding in the reverse direction. (that's a long shot). Something is keeping you outta reverse and sounds mechanical to me.

If you find anything in the oil as mentioned above, drop it and open it up.

Diassembled Lower Unit today. Reverse gear is slightly worn but no more than forward, in the area of clutch dog engagement area. Clutch dogs look good and clutch actuates and functions correctly, with same pressure for both forward and reverse. There was small amount of water mixed in with oil in gear housing could this have been it or could it be the assist valve for the hydromatic set up...????
