I have a Johnson 85 hp powershift 2 (1980 something) I can start the motor out of the water with no problems (I only run it a sec but it runs well) When I put it in water it doesnt start as well or at all. If I do get it running and warmed up it seems to start (not to well but it will). What could cause this?

Backpressure CD....

Out of the water there is no backpressure against the cylinders. In the water there is.

Would like to know the year. If you will post the model number, we can tell you the correct year.

Is this a new problem or have you just gotten the engine?

Try a larger, more powerful battery.
You should not start your motor dry, it will burn up the water pump impeller in seconds.
