Hello, I have a 1978 johnson 35 horespower, that has been having trouble running. It starts fine, but when I give it gas it immediately stalls, so I tried accelerating while pumping gas into the motor by squeezing the bulb, doing this the motor was running great. Now, is this a fuel pump problem or a carb problem? Thanks.

Re: carbs or fuel pump?

In squeezing the fuel primer bulb, you are in effect acting as a manual fuel pump. If this cures the problem, that would indicate that the engine's fuel pump is not operating properly.

The exception to this would be that the carburetor is fouled, but by pumping the fuel primer bulb, you are causing the carburetor to flood somewhat which would force fuel up into the carburetor's throat which would be drawn into the engine.

Bottom line.... If the carburetor isn't flooding, suspect the fuel pump.
