Newbie here, but I've gone through about 100 pages of tips, so I'm sure you guys can help me out.

I have a 90' Johnson 88hp outboard on a 90' Redfin.

I have two problems but I will try a spray of WD-40 to see if the "spinning starter" is fixed by that. (a new battery improved the starting, but every now and then the starter spins but doesn't engage. Moving the pinion to the flywheel by hand and cranking, starts the motor.

Anyway, on to the other issue. I noticed while driving (33mph) there was a warning sounds coming from the control box. Also, noticed that the depth finder started to loose the image(just before noise)...eventually the depth finder quit all together. Then came the annoying constant beep.
We immediately looked at the motor and saw that water was still coming out of the pee-hole and nothing seemed wrong.
We slowed and decided to kill the motor to investigate. When we attempted to start the motor, we got nothing.... no warning(short beep) when turning the key or anything.
My friend opened up the battery box, and saw that the wingnuts had come loose, and he tightened them again. (without completely taking them off, and putting them back)

I've read on here that the long continuous beep can be from either overheating or fuel blocking.

Could it also be tied to the battery terminals coming loose while driving?
After we tighted up the terminals, the motor cranked up, but the constant beep was still sounding.
when we made it back to the dock, we sat in the boat for atleast 20 mins looking at wires etc... but when we started it up to load it on the trailer the beep still sounded constant.

I have yet to try it again, but in the next few days i will turn the key and hope the warning horn isn't continues then crank it up with the muffs and hose to see if it sounds again after warming up.

Also, I will check the control box because it seemed loose.

Whoa, i've had way too much coffee this morning.

Anyway, Thanks in advance...I really hope this is a wiring problem and not an overheating issue..

Tan lead at the block can be disconnected to see if the horn stops.

Disconnecting a battery or reversing cables can fry a rectifier - so I would check that next.

JoeReeves gave a nice discription of how to test the rectifier on this site a couple of weeks ago
go here and scroll down to Sept 13.
