I have johnson 1992 40 hp model# TJ40ELENJ
I just purchaced a factory manual and discovered that when I had the engine rebuilt they incorrectly set the sync and link adjustements for a 1993 model year. This engine runs fine at wot but, starts hard when cold and tends to shut off while shifting from forward to reverse while loading, "especially when a a lot of spectators are at the launch". I would like to change the settings but I am afraid if I do this, the timing will be thrown off and will have to be set. Am I correct on this? Also the manual says to time 19+/- 1 degree bdtc at 5000 rpms with a test prop and tank. is there another way short of running at wot with my wife steering!! Theres got to be a better way.

Re: Running at wot to set timing

Hi fish...that is a scary thought!

Ya' might try this.....

Remove the spark plugs and connect them to a spark tester. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Shift into forwar and then go to wide open throttle. Check the timing screw is seated against the timing stop under the flywheel. If not, temp wire it tight.

Connect a timing light to number one cylinder and crank the engine. Set the timing for 4 degrees less than 19, which would be 15. The power pack will take care of the other 4 degrees.

This should get you in the park. You can do a quick check once you get on the water at wide open throttle.

Follow the manuals procedure for the sync and link.

Keep us posted....thanks.

Re: Running at wot to set timing

Doing a sync and link won't have any effect on your timing advance. The only way that will change is by moving the timing advance stop screw. You can check or re-time the engine by the method ObJ described above (take it out of gear before spinning it with the starter and ground all the plug wires) or you can time it on the trailer in the water. Back it in the water until the prop and water pick-ups are well submerged, hook up the timing light, crank up the engine, put it in gear, run it up to 5k, check and/or adjust the timing too the factory spec. Just be sure the boat is well secured to the trailer. The ramp spectators enjoy watching this procedure.

c/6
Hooty

We set ours floating in a bay with a test wheel on. One guy at the throttle, one at the flywheel.

Thanks for the responses, I will use the test procedure to check the timing befor touching anything, reset the sync and link and recheck.
Will keep you informed of my progress. I paid big bucks to have this work done, have since moved to florida, believe me, I would be at the dealership today with my boat in tow and the manual in hand again thanks for the help.
Re: Running at wot to set timing

obj...
I can not find a timing screw or stop. It has a spark control rod, which should be set to 2-1/16". Futher it directs to run at wop and if adjustment is needed, unclip and two turns of the rod end increases or decreases the timing one degree. This rod operates a leaver that goes under the flywheel. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks for the help.

Re: Running at wot to set timing

I didn't look at what engine we were timing. I was thinking V4 or V6.
The rod going under the flywheel moves the timer base which advances and retards the spark. It's 100% mechanical. The 2 1/16" rod lenght should be right on for the correct time. If not, changing the lenght does the same thing as moving the advance stop we talked about earlier.

c/6
Hooty

Re: Running at wot to set timing

Thanks for the reply Hooty,

If I correct the the sync and link adjustments then remove the spark plugs, ground #2 to the head and attach the timing light to #1, move the throttle to wot and crank the engine, the timing should appear as 15 degrees +/- 1 degree. Is this correct or is there somthing I am not getting?

Re: Running at wot to set timing

The first thing you need to check is the black plastic rollers in the linkage system, if the clear plastic sleeve is missing on the roller in the linkage slot the timing can move around 4 degrees.
