I have a 140 hp 1985 Johnson J140TX and I don't know if the fuel pump has been changed by the prior owner. Also, how does the fuel pump work? I'm assuming that it is a vacuum diaphram off the engine. Could I check for vacuum or pressure and at what location on the pump? FYI I disconnected the VRO and mix my own gas with TCW-3.

You're close. The fuel pump is pulse operated, vacuum and pressure. The best way to check it is measure it's output pressure. Install a tee in the line between it and the carburetor. I think the pressure should read between 2-1/2 and 6psi.

c/6
Hooty

The 1985 pump did not have a no oil being pumped sensor. Pump should have been upgraded to a three wire, may even have a 4 wire pump. If later pump I would check the sensor, all hoses and clamps, should have plastic hose clamps.
