175 hp Evinrude started fine, ran about 300 yards and then quit. wouldn't start back. low on oil, put some in, still wouldn't start. loaded up and took home. started at home but had to give it full throttle, then quit again. finally got running after several attempts, backfired constantly, and quit a few more times. could this be because I ran it out of oil? if so, how long before it gets back to normal?

Hi JAVMAN<br />The First thing I would do is remove the spark plugs and look at the ends to see if it has any gray stuff on it.If it does you have piston damage.Do a compression test first if you do have ad compression in some of the holes remove the cylender heads to verify that you have the damage and to what extent. You may be looking at an expensive powerhead rebuild. It's very important not to run out of oil. It's a hard lesson to learn.

I believe I was low on oil. I had about a 1/4 of a tank in the oil tank. No gray on the plugs. I haven't ran compression check yet. Today I changed the plugs, it fired right up but kept quiting. Finally it stayed running but not a smooth idle, still sounds alittle rough. Didn't have to flood it to start.
