I am a new member and already learned many problems are very year and model specific. I am considering buying a boat with a pair of 1996 225hp Ocean-Pros. I am told they have always been professionally maintained and have about 250 hours. They are very clean and have been used mainly in fresh water. My question is, what are the pros and cons of these motors. How many hours will they last? What RPM should they tach? How many gallons per hour will they burn? Am I okay or should I run. Any input is much appreciated.

tag

few things -90 degree loop vee block
full throttle operating range 5000 to 6000 rpm
power rated at 5500
tl=450 lbs
tx, cx = 455 lb
tz, cz = 471 lb
add 25 lb for power steering.
-
mininum test rpm on test prop is 5700 rpm
35 amp altenator
-
ive been doing work on my 120/140 for about a year know & they are pretty easy compared to others.
120,125,130,140,185,200,225,250 & 300hp
90 degree loop-V motors share the same repair manual.
so much of the repairs are basically the same.
-
my next motor will be a 185 to 225, only because ive learned alot about the 120/140 motors & that will apply to the V6.
-
you should be very happy with them,
but as with any motor if they were abused - you will have to make them rite.

Are you "new" to boating or just to these outboards...makes a difference.

Make sure the carbs are clean...check the plugs...check compression...should be 100 and even on all cylinders...check the rod bearings on each cylinder for sloppyness...look at the stator...is it dripping any black goo...CAREFULLY inspect the fuel lines that supply the carbs fuel, these are the lines that "loop" from the fuel supply rod to the carbs, I would replace them if they have never been replaced. Also, make sure the fuel recirculation system is working properly...replace the little inline plastic check valve that runs from the lower crankcase to the upper crank bearing (this supplies the upper crank bearing with lubrication).

"Professionally maintained" outboards are only as good as the mechanic who has worked on these outboards.

My experience with outboards mechanics has not been that great...just because you take it to a boat dealer doesn't mean their mechanics are reliable.

They are good motors if they a well cared for.

i have to agree, those certificates on the wall only account for attendance of the mech to the courses.
-
it doesnt mean they learned anything or care about the work they do.
some are like car mechs they fix your problem & break something else so you will have to get that fixed - hopefully by them.$$$$$$$$$$$
