Well decided to go out striper fishing on the Chesapeake bay last night, really wanted to see if I still had water intrusion on my lower unit. I recently replaced the prop seal's and O'ring, Shift shaft seal, drive shaft seal's and complete water pump replacement. On the run out the motor started to hesitate and bog, mainly when I hit wakes could this be some sort of bad connection or wire. To make things even worse we called a short night and when I got home, YES I'm still getting water in the L.U. I'm going to get a pressure and vacume test done. Any idea were this water is getting in. I 'll keep you guy's posted on my findings

Motor
1991 Johnson 225
Stoked Not

Yes I purchased the entire seal kit along with a complete water pump kit. Any ideas on my bogging problem?

Do you have a water seperator in the fuel line?

Solittle,
Yes, I have a water seperator. I think I'm going to replace it along with the primer bulb.

Solittle
Hi, I'm new to outboard repair and had no idea the moisture/water from the fuel tank could get into the lower unit. The only thing I can think of is thru the exhaust? Is that right?
Thanks

must be one of those new seperaters that clean it out of the gas & send it to the lower unit incase you accidently run in shallow water with the motor trimmed up to far, lubricating the pump.
-
-
-
-
sorry couldnt resist that one.

BOATMEC04,

Yes replaced the shift shaft seal along with the gasket. I believe I have rplaced every seal. I may have confused some board members with my problems. I have two seperate issues, not related. The first water in the lower unit.
The second, The motor drops in RPM's 4,000 to 1,000 when I hit a wake, then speeds back up again. She seems like she starving for fuel.

Thanks to all in advanced for the help

stoked not
I had a time finding the leak in my lower unit (1958 johnson 50hp) had everything replaced, seals etc. turned out I had two leaks first there was a bad bearing that let the shaft vibrate and pass water into the case, second (it was used in salt water?) there were pits in the case. After washing the outside of the case with brake cleaner, I found an oily spot washed it again and the spot returned. Drained, cleaned, scrapped, jb weld no more leak. May not help you but just my $.02 worth
Richard

Rwise,
I think your on to something. I'm starting to think I have a bad bearing like you did. Thanks for you post any info at this point is a help. I should know next week. I plan on getting the L.U. pressure and vacuumed tested. I'll keep you posted. Any advise on my RPM problem? Went out today and picked up new primer ball and hose along with a new water separator

Re: What A night with my Johnson

Are the seals wearing quickly? The prop or drive shaft may have pits, etc where the seal rides. I had this problem on an old 75hp Johnson. What I learned was OMC chromed the drive shaft where the waterpump seal rides. The chrome pits from water sitting there and eats seals fast...like in one hour. I couldn't find a new shaft and EVERY used one I looked at had the same problem. A machine shop turned the shaft and rechromed the surface for me.

BillP,
Leaked on my first test ride. I don't remember any pitting on the shaft, I take another look when I drop the LU. I think it's time for pres/vac test.

Re: What A night with my Johnson

Wanted to give back to the board, hopefully this will help others.

Last time I posted I had a ongoing problem with water in the L/U and I also inherited a bucking/ missing problem.
I purchaed this boat and motor and have only had it out a coulple of times so I dont have the history.

Well I gave up on trying to be a OB mechanic and took it to a pro. They found a leak under the water pump with the drive shaft seals. I changed this seal once but I guess it didn't take. When I aked the mechanic if my seals where in wrong he said they looked good. In fact he said his first set failed the presure test also, and had to put in a second set. I wonder if this is fixed for good. will see. The shaft has no pitting but I'm starting to wonder about the bearing essebly.

My missing problem was expensive. First they found a loose magnet in the flywheel. Took it for a test ride, no good. Replaced the stator, still no good. replaced the powerpack and I,m good to go, so they say. The mechanic said it ran great. I'll take it out Sat. for a test. well $920 I'm back on the water. I hope.

Tight lines
stoked_not ;)
