1983 50 hp Johnson 2 cyl. Starter is having trouble turning over the motor. Barely turns it over at first and then sometimes spins it fast. Starter motor is becoming so hot that is boils the WD-40 I sprayed on the bendix. Battery is strong and wiring to be good. Help!

You need to try to turn the flywheel by hand and decide whether it has more resistance than it should (you could pull the plugs, and it should turn easily). If the flywheel turns ok, then your starter is bad. you may be able to fix it (rubuild, new brushes or whatever).

Looks like rebuild time or time for a new one.

Look at the hot cable coming into the starter. It may be loose. The overheating problem was hapening to be and all it took was the tightening of the hot cable to the starter
