My '80 evinrude 70 has a starting problem I believe is in the starter motor. Usually I hear the solenoid click when I turn the key. I can get the starter to engage if I loosen the cable connection to the starter & re-tighten. Then I noticed the stud is loose that the battery cable connects to. Question: how to remove the starter motor. It has two bolts holding it to the engine block - removed them no problem, but the dang motor wouldn't come off. Like it's glued in place or something. Should I just manhandle it or am I missing something?

thanks a bunch,
jtw

jtw,Remove the intake silencer and see if there isn't a third bolt that retains the starter.

Thanks, OB. Not wanting a fool for a mechanic, I just ordered a service manual. Soon as it arrives I'm back on the case!

thnaks,
jtw

Ok, found the third bolt hiding behind the silencer. Now, the complete instructions in the book (seloc) for removing the air silencer are as follows: "remove the air intake silencer."

It's got a number of small bolts around the edge but looks like those are holding it together 'stead of holding it on. It's got one recessed bolt near the bottom about in the middle - could that one be holding it by itself?
And do I understand correctly that I need a new gasket everytime I pull it (to access the carbs or whatever)?

Dad had this motor for about 3 years & I just got it couple months ago so I haven't been inside it yet. Oh, and it's a 1979 not a 1980.

thanks very much,
jtw

jtw,Once you remove all of the screws holding the intake silencer cover on and remove it ,you will see the other six bolts that hold the silencer housing to the carb face. Two bolts on each carb. There is also a hose attched to the back side of the silencer that allows fuel oil accumulation to be scavenged into the crankcase. This hose ,if not already detached ,will come off easily. If gaskets have no tears or breaks they can be reused.Good luck.

Thanks for the support - the starter motor came apart & went back together very easily. blew out a bunch of carbon dust & generally cleaned it up with a soft brush - didn't even need any new parts. Now it works like new, but does that oil scavenging hose need to be reattached to the air silencer? looked like it was held in place with a cable tie but that had broken (or been cut & not replaced -last service was done by a reputable mech). Because of the awkward place it's in I couldn't get a new one on it but if its really necessary I'll try again.

thanks,
jw
