50 HP Evenrude Throttle Problems

The engine runs great at full throttle but at half throttle it surges, slows etc.<br />The spark advancer lever moves back and forth at these throttle levels. I have taken the fly wheel off and set the sensors. No rubbing in this area. I have change the spring in the spark advance lever. <br /><br />Four mechanic have worked on it. Runs great at full throttle because the bolt holds the spark advance full ahead.<br /><br />Any ideas.

rick, when you had the flywheel off did you check to see if the stator was swelled? happens alot! the stator will swell out a little, then as the flywheel turns, it will move the timing.<br />may not be the problem, but sure sounds like somethings movin it.

Rick, beneath the magneto plate there is a plastic phenolic ring on a lot of evinrudes. As this wears, it fails to keep pressure on the plate that keeps it from rattling back and forth. This might solve your problem. nevjb

Thanks folks. Great suggestions. I was aware of that ring and had thought about replacing it. Also, while I have the fly wheel off I will check for the swelling.<br /><br />Thanks so much. I'll let you know the outcome.
