Carb Nedle Valve questions?

I have a 1978 70hp johnson. I bought carb kits and took everything apart this weekend. From what I saw in the manual there is a low speed needle valve. I dont seem to have one on my carbs. All I have is a screw in the spot where it shows the low speed needle. Is this suppose to be here? if it is, how do I set my carb to stop flooding. I set the floats when the carb is turned upside down so they are level with the gasket area of the bowl. I took the boat out today and when I start it and then put it from nuetral to forward it dies and then it would not start again. Any Ideas?

I didnt notice anything under that screw, is it something that I may have to pry out, or should it just slide out? I guess I will take it apart again and look at it.

Re: Carb Nedle Valve questions?

I took out both screws again. The first screw on the float bowl seems to have nothing behind it. I see something way in the back but it doesnt look like it has any grooves for a screw driver. Is this something that should be able to come out? I took the other screw, the one on the top of the carb out, and way behind it I unscrewed a very small plug which was backed in all the way against the rod that goes vertical in the carb. Does anyone know what this is? Is there anything that I'm possibly missing. Do any of these screws adjust fuel mixture?

Re: Carb Nedle Valve questions?

These carbs have a fixed high, and low speed jet. They are removed with a special ground screwdriver. A regular screwdriver could damage the jets, or the carb body. The verticle brass tube is an emulsion tube. The carbs also have soft plugs that should be in the kit. These should be removed to properly clean the carb passages. When done, the engine must be properly set in sync, and idle pick-up timing set. I would advize getting proper help with this project.
