On occasion, (twice now) when I hit the starter button, the starter spins, but does not pop up to engage the flywheel. Then it will be ok for a while. Don't want to put up with this for long, Can you clue me in on what might be going on? Thanks.

Seems that the Bendix shaft and gear need some lubrication, Fishdog. You could spray it with WD-40, but I prefer a light machine oil like sewing machine or gun oil.

Moving this to JohnnyRude Troubles.

Take a look at your battery connections, I'll bet they are wing nuts. Replace them with brass, or stainless nuts.

Don't use WD40. It isn't really a lubricant. I use 30 wt. motor oil on my starter bendix shaft once in a while and it keeps it working fine. Check your connections, but usually if the starter spins but the gear doesn't engage, it's a lube issue.
