I have a 85 Evinrude non VRO and I am planning on having them resleeve the #1 Cylinder. The machine shop says that all the other cylinders look fine. Is this true or will it through my compression all off. I am putting new rings in all 4 cylinders. I have heard about something called magnaflux? Suggestions?

Hi Chester

The ones to tell are the machine shops.
It is possible, and common too, that wear and compression are within the limite, and why fix what isnt broken ?

Be sure to hone to create a crosspattern, helping the new rings to seat.

Good luck !

Before you resleve a cylinder consider reboring. You can go at least .030 or .060 without problem.
Magnaflux as I remember it the process it was a means of detecting flaws or cracks in metal. I can't remember if it can be used on non-ferrous material. Before magnaflux we soaked (if possible)
the part in oil for awhile and then liberally covered the part with chalk or flour. This process would cause the oil to soak up the flour or chalk if there was a crack.

It's common to have one or two badly scored cylinder, and have the rest look fine.

Measuring with a dial bore gauge will tell the tale no matter how good they look.

You didnt mention what year the motor is and that will determine what oversizes are available.

Magnaflux is a process for finding cracks in steel or iron. It uses magnetized particles or a solution that will line up on a crack. If they magnaflux the rods and/or crank be POSITIVE they de-magnetize them.

Why do you want to resleeve instead of boring?

Good luck!
