prop will not spin freely

my motor is a 1957 18h evinrude. my motor will not shift, handle moves to all positions. where is the problem? prop will not spin freely in neutral or opposite of direction needed. I checked shift rod connector it is connected.

Sounds like shift fork in lower unit is broken or have shifted position-due to wear

this is my first motor so i am new at this is it costly to repair?

iguana jim,<br /><br />The lower unit will have to be disassembled. That is at leas t acouple hours labor. Can't say about parts until one gets in there.

Could just be that someone removed the pivot pin from the skeg and did not replace it properly.<br /><br />If you want to check it, get a stong light, lay the motor on its side, and take the pivot pin out. You may be able to see the shifter lever and the hole through which the pin is supposed to go. If you don't, probe for the hole until you can line it up, and replace the pin.

when i move the prop by hand in either direction there is compression feeling.

Thought a photo might help. You can see the shift rod connecting to the shifter lever. The pin must pass through the hole for the lever to work.<br /><br />Most likely your motor is locked in gear.<br /> Picture
