I have been given a 1975 challenger bass boat with a 1975 85 h/p evenrude on it.(number 85593)
the boat sat most of last summer and this summer because he was building his sons house so he goes and buys himself a new boat and gave me this one which he has had since it was new. Took it out and it would clime up to about 5200 and was slow about it. came back and did a compression ck and it was 130 on the cylinder in question.
swapped coils and the number two still wouldn't fire pull plug wire off and didn't make any difference took plug out and grounded it against motor and it has strong spark so someone please tell me what is wrong Oh yes i already cleaned carbs and replaced all fuel lines Haven't rebuilt fuel pump yet but will do it . any input would be appreciated

Don't want to add to your frustration, but it sounds like you are not getting fuel to that cylinder. Could you tell if that plug was wet with fuel when you took it out? It should be soaked if the problem was electrical.

If the plug was dry, try this, put your fingers over the #2 barrel on the carb while the engine is at idle and see if it evens up at all. If it does, get back to us.

haven't tried that but what would stop the fuel from getting to the cyl will try that as soon as i can I did pull the plug out and it was wet and there was smoke coming from that plug hole. the plug gets warm like it is fireing but does not change the sound of engine when removed

It is real slow about running up the rpms and when setting at idle you can pull no two plug wire off and it doesn't change the sound of the motor but all the other three will just about kill it

Re: no spark on number two

Bubba...sounds like no fire at idle and finally kicks in at some rpm. Having just one power pack should make it easy to troubleshoot.

Rig a spark tester so you can see the spark at each spark plug lead. The spark should jump at least a 7/16inch gap and should be a hot blue/white spark.

Hook the tester up to all the spark plug wires and crank the engine. Note the spark on #2 and #4. Ya' probably won't have spark on number 2. Take the cover off the power pack and locate the sensor leads to #2 and #4. Swap them and crank again. If the no spark condition jumps to number 4 cylinder, you have a bad coil in the timer base and will need to replace it. If you still have no spark at #2, the power pack is at fault and you will need to replace it. Make sure also that the ignition coil grounds are good.

Don't fergit to put the sensor wires back to their original place after testing.

Re: no spark on number two

I would swap plugs & spark plug wires with another cylinder first to rule those out.

Re: no spark on number two

Well did all the above suggestions and this is what I came up with. The power pack is at fault.
went and ordered one (pricey little suckers to)
it will be in thur or fri so I will install and let you know the results. Thanks guys for all the input BTW I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump because after 29 + Years I figured it was time to replace. :D
