I have a 1979 pull start johnson 9.9 that I'd like to add a generator to. Is there a kit I can buy? Is the conversion expensive? I would do the work myself. About how many amps would this put out?

The engine is used on a sailboat. It only has one battery (group 24) that is charged with a solar panel. I just want the option of charging with the engine too.

I know someone who has a 74 with electric start and the generator. He said it runs but really is only good for parts. We have not worked out how much he wants for it yet. I was wondering if it's worth picking up to take the generator off of? Or would I just be better off buying the parts new?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Johnson offers a battery charging kit, p/n 173358, which fits 1977 to 1982 model 9.9 & 15 hp outboards. It lists for about $185 and can be ordered thru any Johnson/Evinrude dealer. If you want to use "used" parts, you'll need to find them from an engine in the 1977 to 1982 range.

-John

Thanks for the info. I'm glad I did not buy that 74 parts engine.

Less then $200 not too bad I might just go with the kit.

Thanks again.
