1997 Johnson 175 HP with 164 hours sent connect1ng rod through the side of the block. I need suggestions on which way to go. Should I replace with a after market power head, a factory power head or sell the thing as salvage and buy a new or used unit. I have some experience as I replaced a power head on my mercury 150, by following the Mercury repair manual. Any suggestions on where to obtain the power head. Also, will the old power head with a hole in the side be accepted as a good core? Any other suggestions would be very helpful

Re: 1997 Johnson 175 needs power head

I have 95 175 evinrude. Upper bearing failure due to previous owners stupidity. Complete block, pistons, rods, crank, rings, flywheel, seals and gaskets cost 2500 bucks. With labor and a few minor replacements, motor ran me 4000 American (with a 1 year warranty). Weighing that number verse 12K for a new motor, I basically have a new motor for 1/3 the price. If you have a trusted and fair mechanic,i would suggest my route.
Good Luck

Re: 1997 Johnson 175 needs power head

Just rebuilt- allowance of $450.00 for my old core.
They have pretty good prices on this site on remanufactured powerheads.
When you buy used, you don't know the history of
the engine. If your lower unit is good, I'd
lean towards a remanufactured powerhead.A heck of a
lot better than spending 10K+. Good luck.
