Hello.
Without the model # my guess is '62 or '63.The pipe in the top is the sensor for the heat activated choke.(when cold chokes engine, when warming up releases choke)this pipe comes from the exhaust housing. Sorry I don't know about the hole in the bottom of the exhaust.

Hi Marc and welcome to iboats forums.

When ever you post a problem, always be sure to post the hp and model number of the enigne. You can find the model number around the transom hangers on a plate or on top off the block on a core plug.

Thanks and keep posting.

Air is drawn into the bottom hole in the exhaust baffle plate area that you mention. The drawing motion is created by the engine running, creating a vacuum at the intake manifold area. The intake manifold has a hole designed in it so that it matches a like hole in the carburetor that leads to the choke assy.

This vacuum drawns the air into that lower hole of the exhaust baffle plate, then into a heat exchanger that is located on the other side of the exhaust baffle plate in the exhaust chamber. The heat exchanger of course heats the air that is being drawn through.

Exiting the heat exchanger, the heated air is drawn into the pipe that is attached to the top hole, then through that pipe to the choke assy. As the air gets hot, the spring in the choke assy releases its tension which allows the choke butterfly to open.

Hello,
I came into this forum while trying to read about a boat i just bought 3 weeks ago and i found your note interesting because i have the same motor and the model number is close to yours, it is a johnson 40 hp electramatic i have no idea what year the model number is RKL 027A.
I am not familiar with boats and i never had any experience, I love fishing and I want to learn about boating. I tried it in the water on a windy day it was a lot of fun. bt didnnt run, just start few seconds and shut down. i bought new spark plugs trying to find a gasket for carb because there is a leak of gas from it, just waiting for a good weather in weekend and start working on it again, hopefully it will work.
Thanks.
