I have an '72 Evinrude Model 2202 M -E04388. This outboard motor has very few hours on it, (the paint on the prop is hardly warn)I am the second owner.

Some history:
I acquired this outboard from my brother in 1994. He bought it second hand from someone in the 1980's. I used it several times with out problem. In 1998 the engine started and ran well but after about 40 minutes of operation the engine would slow down and then quit. After waiting for about 15 minutes the engine could be started again and would run well, for about 40 minutes and then stop. Actually the engine ran like this for a whole weekend. The Fuel tank had adequate fuel. The fuel vent was open. Cooling water was coming out the tell-tail holes and was not overly warm.

Now the present problem:
I can not start the engine.

There is good spark.

I have taken the carb apart and cleaned, (with carb cleaner,) all the parts and put it back together, (The old parts, gaskets and seals seem good. I did not put a new kit back in. Fuel is getting to the bowl and is not overflowing the jets are clean.

The cylinder compression is 65 psi.

If I spray Fuel into the intake from an oil can, the engine runs for a short time.

I am sure that I need a new impeller. Do I need to just change the impeller or should I put in a water pump kit?

I think the cylinder compression is low. What should it be? Does it sound like the engine needs rings? The cylinder is not scored at all.

The intake reed valves seem to be in good shape, not bent or corroded.

When I put the engine back together, I had a part left over. This is a flat stainless steel part about 1.5 inches long. I think that it is secured by one of the bolts that secures the top recoil housing to the frame around the engine but I don't know what it does or which bolt it is attached with. Any Ideas?

Thank you for your help.
