hello,
My dad gave me his 53' 10hp evinrude 5 years ago, it's been in the garage ever since. Before I pull the starting rope, is there anything I should do to the motor to lube it up?

regards,
stevenj
richmond, va

get a can of fogging oil, pull the spark plugs out and fog the pistons, and put some down the carb, while the plugs are out, its a good time to make sure you can turn the motor over and check for spark, if you have good spark, i would clean the carb, and crank her up

OK, thanks for the info. By cleaning carbs, do you mean the spray carb cleaner, or disassembly and soak/wipe with gas?

also, when I try and start the thing, do I need to mount the motor in a large bucket/trashcan with water or is using the earmuff type water adaptor sufficient?

thanks,
stevenj

When cleaning the carbs, you need to dissasemble them and preferably use a rebuild kit in them. Spraying carb cleaner into the carb throats will accomplish nothing. You may get away with taking them apart and cleaning with carb spray and compressed air. Be sure to spray and blow through all passages inside the carb, including the Jets. Set float so that it is level with the float bowl housing when the carb is turned upside down. You can run either in either a deep bucket of water or on the muffs. If in a bucket, make sure the water pick-ups are submerged.

Don't run the motor up to higher speeds until you replace the waterpump impeller. Since it's been sitting, it probably has taken on a 'set' by now. They're supposed to be star shaped, yours probably has all the vanes bent over.
When you rev up one of those misshapened impellers, they can fly apart and clog up the cooling system. It's a pain to clean the bits out.
PS - don't rev the engine unloaded ever. (ie, in neutral)

Good luck!
