I am looking at a 1995 Baystealth VIP with a 112HP Johnson on it. The seller claims that it has low hours, and runs great.

What types of things should I look for when I go to look at the boat? I will be doing a compression test, and I'll look for bubbly paint from overheating...anything else?

It appears to be in good shape. The skeg on the engine still has all of the paint on it, and the prop looks like the original prop. I assume that it does have low hours just because of the two hints I gave above.

110-115PSI is what it should have, with less then 5psi variation, right?

What else?

Thanks!
Shawn

Compression will vary from guage to guage and depending on technique, Shawn.

Anything over 100psi and within a 10% span is fine.

That was a good engine when new, and if it has had good care it is still a good engine.

Good luck. :)

JB,

Thanks again.

I must've received 10 answers on 10 different engines from you alone, haha! I just haven't yet found 'THE' boat I guess...

I may still buy a new one as well...still undecided. This boat looks to be a steal though. We'll see how it looks in person in a few days.

I'll post up compression results if I get to the boat before he sells it.

Thanks!
Shawn
