Hi, new to the forum!!!

I have an 86' EV 90 VRO. Always been a good running motor. The boat has been sitting for several years, and the jets have gummed up. I know that it may be possible to pop out the drains and try to clean out the jets but, am I looking for trouble if I don't pull the carbs off overhaul them? Could dirty carbs possibly cause a catostrophic motor event?

thanks,
H90

Yes, they could cause major problems if one runs lean. It will run hot and burn a piston and cause a severe failure. disasseble the carbs and get kits for each. Clean them out with carb cleaner from the dealer. Blow all the passages out with compressed air and reassemble. Also, drain and clean the VRO tank and inspect the oil lines to the carbs from the VRO. Replace old gas. Drain and refill the lower unit, inspecting for milky looking lube when you drain it.

Very good advice from Rick, as usual.

Rebuild the carbs.

By the way, replace the water pump impeller while your at it. The shift linkage is a breeze to get at, with the carbs off. :)

Thanks. I'll do it all.
Done several impellars on smaller motors.
I guess it shouldn't be too bad.
Are the carbs very simple? I have nightmares about bb's, springs and tiny parts flying.
Also, I have been reading here about the VRO bypass question. From what I gather expert mechanics favor keeping the VRO with aggressive service and attention to critical parts. Since new ones are Very expensive, I would have to favor a rebuild kit if my 18 year old one failed. It has never had a problem and I haven't paid much attention to it. The boat shop I take it to for spring service made it sound like it was a time bomb waiting to blow up my motor, so it has me a little concerned.
I think after reading all these posts about it
I would favor testing the alarm whenever I take the boat out as I am test running the engine, by using a premix tank and hose and plugging the oil connection. What to you think, too paranoid?

H90

Carbs for 2 cycle motors are much simpler than auto carbs. Suggest that you get the manual +

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/carburetors/

When I got my 87s 10 yrs ago I went to pre mix right away. Lots of contraversy on this but as for me I did not want to wonder all the time if the VRO was working OK.

Just click on "repair manuals" in the buttom of this side. I´ve been satisfied with the Clymer - very informative.

I would get the OMC manual if you are planning to keep the motor for any length of time and do your own work. Manuals like Clymer cover several years and hp ratings. To me they often miss something that I need to know about MY motor or it is difficult to find what I'm looking for.

Try:

http://www.theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com/parts_service_and_owners_manuals.html

I have the utmost confidence in the oil injection system if:

1. The oil lines are flexible, not cracked.

2. The oil tank is drained, preferably annually and refilled and reprimed. (Run 50:1 fuel mix until you verify oil useage-draw a line on the tank marking the level)

3. Only original type clamps are used.

4. The alarm works.

Found the OMC Manual for my motor at OBwizard.
Thanks. $40 is is very reasonable considering it costs $90 an hour for shop work, and you can't beat factory tech manuals. I always buy one for my cars but never for this cheap.
As for the VRO, I'm going to temporarily bypass it until have a chance to learn more about them and perhaps refurb mine in my spare time. After all it is 18 years old. But as for reliability, 18 years without a hitch, I would say that is pretty good.
I figure mixing can't be much more trouble than keeping the VRO tank filled.

H90
