Well..I think I am ready to put my lower unit back together. I lost the detent balls for the clutch dog and took the prop shaft to the hardware to see if they had some ball bearings to fit. The 1/4" were too big and the 3/16 look pretty small, are the factory balls in between these sizes? The motor is a 30 hp Johnson. Thanks....Lee

Re: Detent balls

Detent balls have a habit of getting lost. They just disappear, never to be seen again.....until ya sweep up the shop.

You should just get over to the Johnny/Rude dealer and order a couple....maybe and extra to. Off the shelf ball bearings won't work.

I was afraid of that. We don't have a dealer anywhere close and the Shad connection is closed down for some reason.Forgot to order them when I ordered seal kit...DOH!

Re: Detent balls

There is a special tool you are going to need to put those balls, and spring back in place.

Re: Detent balls

The Seloc manual shows a way of putting it back together without that tool...probably be REAL frickin fun. All I saw on the other site was Merc parts...are they the same? Not sure of the year of lower unit..it looks like it is the same as the "Pumpjet" lower I am replacing with it..it has the shift coupling behind the intake screens and the bolt holes match up.

Re: Detent balls

Sir this is not the forum for a problem like that. You need to seek medical treatment if your balls have detents.

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. :D

Re: Detent balls

Harker: It is'nt all that much fun with the with the proper tool. You have to be carefull that you don't have a ball slip out and get behind the gear without realizing it. Have the case clean of all grease, and oil. When you feel you have the spring, and balls in place, shake the case to be sure they are not rattling around. You don't want to send one of those hardened steel balls through the gears.
