Hi
I'm running a 1980 Johnson 55 2 cylinder, on a 17ft tri-hull fishing boat that weighs about 1000lb, (don't know exact weight). My prop is a 11 3/4 X 17, but I don't know if this is the right prop because I don't have a tach fitted.

Could anyone tell me which tacho I could use for my engine? I haven't seen any on the parts web sites, and the only one I've seen on e-bay is one for a 4 or 6 cylinder engine. Could I use a motor cycle tacho? After all, it would be for a 2 stroke and 2 cylinder engine.

Also, if I buy a non OMC tacho, can I buy the plug that fits with the one on my control box, as a part on it's own?

Thanks in advance.
Steve

Re: Yet another tach question.

Any Tach. that can be set to 6 pole will work and connect to your control box outlet(Separate wiring harness required). Teleflex has a ton of them on Overtons or West Marine and others.... Or, there's always Tinytach, which will work on anything...

www.tinytach.com

Harness at Cabelas $35.00
Tachs are about $55.00

Re: Yet another tach question.

If I get a non OMC tach, could I make my own wiring harness? The plug on my control box looks the same as the connection used on my ignition coils. Is this type of plug a standard OMC part?

If so, does anyone know what colour wires in my control box, go to what positions on the tach? My manual doesn't include the wiring diagram for tachographs.

Thanks
Steve

Re: Yet another tach question.

If you have a Gray wire hanging around under your console and isn't connected to anything, it's for the tach sending terminal. Check around..
