1979 Evinrude 6 horse. model 6905 ser.# J0001160.
The crack is the line in the picture between the drain plug and the bottom bolt head as viewed in this picture. Talking to people on the phone they say it's too close to the bolt hole and the drain hole and may warp these areas if heated too much. Should I try to find someone to do it or go the JB Weld route until I can replace it? I was also told that replacing just the skeg half of the LU may not work because it may not match up and therefore not seal correctly. Opinions on that?
Hey ducker....my opinion....a good welder can weld it and not hurt the drain plug hole. Just remove the drain plug gasket and put the plug back in. You'll want to remvoe the lower half also. I've had a couple repaired like this with no problems. Finish up the weld with a file and a little filler. Paint and good as new.

Keep us posted.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I guess I should have talked to a welder instead of just a mechanic. Now I just have to find a welder. I'll be taking the skeg off anyway so I can reseal everything after it's fixed. Thanks again.

Will do. Just talked to a prop repair shop that has been in business here for 60 years. They said they can probably do it. I'll be going there soon.

Not sure but one edge of the crack is raised as if there was pressure from inside. There is water in there so I'm assuming so far that a seal failed and let water in which froze and cracked/split the housing.

for what you will pay to have that fixed u can get a used lower unit off ebay. and have extra parts. i think the lower unit is the same on a 9.5 also and there are 4 of them on there now. i did not look for 6 hp but you might get lucky

I had a 2 inch crack welded on the lower unit of my 15 HP Johnny. The guy has been doing it for years. The crack was closer to the drain plug then yours is. The guy charged my $30.
Stalker

Hey Ducker,How did you get the crack in the first place?Once you get it fixed you might think about getting a skagg plate for it.There alittle spendy but they will pay for itself in the long run.I put one on my 120 johnson after breaking off a small section of the original tail on my motor while just drifting down the columbia river and hitting a solid rock a couple feet under water. They are available at fisherman's or you can order one at Cabella's.

Wayne, the plate I'm taking about mounts to the bottom of the original skagg and has kind of a v'd horisontal plate that works very well when you run into shallow gravel etc.Believe me it has saved my prop more that once!!!

Well I have it all taken apart so I can take the skeg in to get it fixed. While cleaning it out I found a chunk of metal in the goo. Turns out it one of the teeth from the pinion gear. That is the only thing I can find inside that doesn't actually look really good. To my relatively inexperienced eye the gears look great. Except for the piece off the pinion. Is that going to be a problem? Can I just leave it the way it is or should I start looking for a replacement pinion?

Here's a shot of the weld. What do you think? By the way, it was $20 and done while I waited. My kind of shop. Nice guy too.
It looks fine - no problem at all. You could sand a little bit of it away it you want, but be very carefull.

A place called Alumafab in Tigard. It's a one man shop behind a guys house. I just picked him out of the phone book and it sounded like the place to go after talking to him on the phone. I can certainly recommend him. I mentioned another place earlier in this thread but when I talked to them they seemed pretty reluctant and even said it might take a week to get to it so that was the last I talked to them. Maybe they were that busy I don't know.
