I'm looking at a 1998 Evinrude 200 (carbureted not a FICHT) as part of a package. I'm going to have the shop that services the engine for the seller do a compression check. What should the compression be? What's acceptable and what is not? What other things should I be looking for? I'm told that the engine has less than 200 hrs. on it and that no major repairs have been done other than a new alternator 2 years ago. What regular maintenance should have been done? Should the water pump have been replaced annually, new spark plugs annually, greasing, lower unit fluid, etc.? If I buy it, what things should I do to it before I put it in water? As you can see, I am a novice. But, I guess the good thing is that I realize that I am a novice. Thanks for your help.

Actually, you've answered your own questions, except for the compression. I would look for at least 100 PSI and no more than a 10% difference between the cylinders. Everything else you said should be or should have been done. Most of all, you will want to hear it run and make sure it idle well and accelerates smoothly. No missing or stuttering. Does the T&T work smoothly and hold solid at any position? Since it is part of a package, you should request a trial run on the water, if possible.

paulgs,

I think it's safe to say that RB means hear the engine run under load, as if in the water, or at least in a test tank.

Idling on the hose, can be misleading.

Check the bolts in the upper main bearing housing.

Re: 1998 EVINRUDE 200 compression

Thank you all for your responses. I know this is basic but what is T&T? Also, if the plugs and water pump were not replaced annually would that have done irreparable harm or is it "cured" by having it done now? What would checking the bolts in the upper bearing housing tell me? Has this been a problem with those engines? What other things should be done for a "tune up" on an engine like this?
Thanks.

T&T is the Tilt and Trim system of your motor. The hydraulic unit that raises your lower unit up and down. Nothing will be harmed if the plugs or water pump has not been changed in the last year. You will want to change the water pump if it has not been done in the last 2 years. No harm has come from not doing these things in the last year. As a rule, Replace Water Pump every 2 years, Lower unit fluid check and change every year. Spark Plugs should be be changed every start of the season or when nessesary. A compression check will tell you if the engine is in good shape internally. Very Nessesary and most important!! And finally, as DJ suggested, I was referring to running the engine under a load, hopefully on the water...
