evinrude 9.9?

I have 2 old engines. one is an 85 evinrude 9.9 electric start and the other is an 81 Johnson 9.9. with manual start. Both have electronic ignition. They are essentially the same engine as far as I can tell. The compression in the Evinrude is poor so I decided to move the electric start over to the Johnson. Because of the differences I ended up moving the entire electrical system over to the Johnson. The only major difference that I can see other than the electric starter and thye flywheel with extra teeth for the elec start is that the armature plate on the engine with electric start has 2 additional magnets , presumably for battery charging.

After re-assembly the "new" engine will not start. Not even a cough. The spark plugs make spark, the carb is getting gas and the air intake is not blocked. The shop manual says that timing is not adjustable with electronic ignition. I triple checked the wiring and carefully marked all wires coming across. The crankshaft position is identical in both engines at TDC and the flywheel key is in the same spot. I am rather frustrated now.

If anyone can follow my rambling explanation here have you got any suggestions of what to try next?

(yes, seeking professional help would seem the next obvious step but I am determined to give this a good effort first.)(especially since I blew my budget on rigging!)

Keith

Re: evinrude 9.9?

Try turning the wires from stator plate to coil's around, sounds like you are 180 out of time.
