I have twin '84 150 V6 Evinrude model E150TLCRD and one with a trim problem that appears to be related to the valving. When either trimming up or down, the trim cylinders must either fully extend or fully retract (depending on direction) before the tilt cylinder takes over. If I have it trimmed all the way down, the motor bracket is not resting on the shafts that come out of the trim cylinders because they are fully retracted. Any ideas on where to start looking? Thanks in advance.

That problem is caused by too much tension on the tilt tube/sleeve.... the sleeve that the mechanical steering cable would go through. It's usually caused by a salt corrosion build up.

Usually by greasing the grease fitting associated with the tilt/tube sleeve/transom brackets, and loosing one side nut or the other a half turn, then giving that area a swift belt with a piece of wood and a large hammer (wherever it's needed) will cure the problem.

Lowering the engine is a gravity type situation at first. The tilt cylinder simply allows the engine to drop via gravity to the trim cylinders. If the steering tilt/tube sleeve is too tight, the trim rams will move before anything else does.

Thanks. I will give it a shot tonight and see if it fixes it.

Joe, you were right on the money! I'll try and giving you something harder next time as I am in the middle of my spring maintenance to get ready for offshore this summer. Thanks.
