i have 1972 electric shift 50hp. i need to remove the exhaust housing plate thing on the port side of the motor. i think thats what its called. i have excess water in my exhaust and cylinders and was told it could be a inner exaust housing gasket. i already did the head gasket and many other parts, read earliewr posts. i

i have all bolts from exhasut plate but the lower right corner.. its stripped, i have to drill it out, but there is no room. i am trying to remove lower cowl so i can get room to drill it out as there is only about 1 inch room now.

ive tried taking off the lower cowl part , all bolts are out but it only moves around.. does it come all the way off??? how

or maybe removing the powerhead, which scares me...

so far ive removed carbs, starter, coils, head, selenoid, all wires. that big wire conjuction/power pack... so its just a bare powerhead rite now.....

any help or suggestions are welcome and appreciated. thanks

Did you disconnect the shift rod? That would hold it.

Hi Mike

You cannot remove the lower cowl, unless the powerhead is off. It is possible to drop it a couple of inches though. If the head is snapped of the bolt, it is mostly possible to get the waterjacket off, by carefully breaking it loose. Dont use a lot of force, you will break a corner of it. When you got as far as you are with stripped powerhead, you might as well pull it totally, it will give you a better opportunity to get the bolt out.

Remove the plastic cover below the lower cowling, bolts are behind that. First disconnect shift rod below carbs. It is truly the best to follow steps in a manual.

Have you tried vise grips, also, you could cut the head off the bolt with a dremel , remove the cover and probably have a shaft you could pb blast and vise grip out. Ive gotten some seriously stuck messed up bolts out this way.

The boat motor salvage yards will have one. There are several - but as I am from Denmark it would be better if someone near you could advise you to find one near you.
