I can't seem to solve this nagging problem. Motor:79 70hp Johnson Seahorse.

Description of Prob: Starts fine and idles in neutral fine. Runs at full speed great but it bogs and stalls sometimes if you go straight to full throttle. The real nagging problem is encountered at the lowest speed while in gear (forward or reverse). It will run for a short time and then slowly die out. Sometimes it dies in several seconds and sometimes it goes a minute or so before choking out.
What's been don so far: Mechanic changed plugs and cleaned carbs, checked compression, spark, etc. and thought he found prob with pieces of rubber from fuel line in carbs- cleaned carbs and replaced lines, but problem still persisted. I brought it back and he researched it further- said dealer told him this vintage had carb problems that came out in a service letter/recall in early 80s where something in carbs vibrated loose and Johsnon recalled carbs. Dealer told him changing the timing or vacuum (I'm not technical but he showed me that he moved the small white wheel back off the linkage about 1/2 inch) slightly smoothed out the problem and was a cheaper alternative to 3 new carbs. So, he made this adjustment but problem persists. Another mechanic suggested bad thermostats.

Help? DO I need new carbs? Can you even find them for a 1979 70hp? Fuel pump possibly? timing sticking?

Coud it be something that's been overlooked? Any technical thoughts would be VERY MUCH appreciated. Thanks in advance!

well i can answer a few of your woes.

first it def sounds like a fuel problem. and no, you more than likely dont need new carbs. thats a load of bull *^#$. i have a 1972 that runs like a top.
you should really take off your carbs and rebuild them. the kits are fairly cheep and its extremely easy, for anybody with a screwdriver and some needle nose pliers. you take off, take apart, let soak, re assemble with new parts, blow dry, install...

and yes you can find carbs for that motor all day long on ebay

Put new jets in the carbs, they are small brass jets you can buy at most outboard repair places. All three carbs won't even run you twenty bucks.

cmorin, if you fix your problem, let us know, ive got a 79 75 h.p. stinger that does the exact same thing, had carbs rebuilt, timing adjusted, told it was a problem with spark advance timing engines, etc etc, if you come to a conclusion let me know. I'm about to try a 3rd mechanic in 3 years, hopefully he knows something. thanks in advance. otis44

Sounds like it's running lean at low speed. Don't know if those had adjustable low speed jets or not. But I do know if it's running the slightest bit lean, it will die out on ya..

Re: HELP- 79 Johnson 70hp dies at lowest speed

Thanks for the imput so far.

I don't know if the jets are adjustable or replaceable. Something in these carbs (year 77-81 models) "supposedly" had jet or reed seats that cracked and ended up being recalled. Mechanics tried to braze them and epoxy them but nothing worked to solve the problem short of replacing with new carbs. Do any of you long-time Johnson mechanics know of this? Can someone post the recall/service letter if they still have it?

Per posts, are the low speed jets adjustable on these?

Do new jets come with a rebuild kit?

I'd like to hear from any mechanics with a strong Johnson background to hear how they weigh in on this.

Of course, I appreciate everyone's continued and helpful thoughts.

This is exactly what I am expereinecing and tryuing to solve, one person suggested a carbi cleaner you add to the fuel, which I have tried with very little rsolve. Another suggested rebuild the carbi's, I am waiting on 3 x carbi kits which has set me back $25.00 aust. each. It seems after researching all the forums the carbi kits are the go!
Will let you know how I go!

Re: HELP- 79 Johnson 70hp dies at lowest speed

All, Great news! I bought some carbi kits for my Seahorse ET70S77 3 cylinder and on pull down found that the top carbi the butterfly was way out of setting. On replacement and rebiuld of carbi's the little spring that is included in the new kits( not installed in original carbi set up) actually makes the needle and seat work, doesn't rely on engine pull or weight of needle.
So I have a responsive Seahorse at any speed and means I can sleep at night!
Cost of carbi kits were less than $25.00 each.:)

where and whom did you buy the carbi kits. And did i understand you to say it came with a spring that helps seat the needle? Glad to hear yo got some resolution to your prob. My 79 70hp acts very similar. That is before your started running right.LOL
