Hello, I just bought a boat with a 40 hp and I cannot get it to start. When I turn the key the alarm diagnostic goes through and all of the lights go out. However it will not turn over the starter solenoid. If I jump the starter the motor will turn over. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong I am open to all suggestions, please help.
Thanks in advance.

Check the connections at the selonoid and make sure they are not loose or corroded. If all looks well, I would have to say you have a bad selonoid if you are getting 12 volts to the selonoid..

How old is the motor? Have you checked all electrical connections?

Yes, it is a 99. I have checked all of the connections and they are clean and tight. I am not getting 12 volts at the solenoid. There are 4 wires that go to the back of the ignition switch, a black/white, black/yellow, purple, and red/black does anyone know what these wires are or have a wiring diagram that would help me figure this out. I'm not sure if I have a bad ignition switch or I am just not doing something right.

Kill switch lanyard in place? Disconnect the black/yellow wire at the engine terminal strip and see if it fires. If it does you will have to choke it to kill it. Aso, check the fuse in the engine compartment. Should be near the starter.

Good point, DJ! Always look for the simple stuff first... Especially with a new boat..

Yes, I checked to make sure it was in neutral good point. Also the lanyard clip was in the holder another good one. The fuse is also good by the solenoid. What exactly does the black with the stripe you want me to pull off of the terminal strip take care of? Instead of choking it will turning off the key shut it down?
Thanks again for all help, I won't get to look at it till tonight so keep the ideas coming thanks.

It eliminates the kill circuit. Give it a try. Or unplug the large red connector and jump out the starter and see if it fires..

duck slayer,

Take caution. If you sart it with the big red plug unplugged, you will have to choke it manually, to kill it.
