Re: can i buy a new boat without the motor?

Most of our outboard boats arrive without motors. Those arrive in a separate truck. Trailers as well. Most are ordered with motors to get better prices, but you can probably special-order one without. As far as a boat with no fittings ... that would be more difficult. Factories only price complete units. I'm sure they'd have to do a whole lot of refiguring of their prices and make a special exception which would probably not save you much and could cost more because of the "custom" job they now have to do. And of course, you'd have to wait for it. Probably a long time. Right now they're ramped-up for full production and throwing a monkey wrench into their works would probably cost them money. I'd bet you'd have to wait until the end of the regular production run. Naturally this depends entirely on the company. Some are more accomidating than others. But you'd probably be best off ordering a bare-bones model and adding whatever stuff you wanted beyond what it comes with. Then again, a boat fresh out of the mold with nothing done afterwards ... they might go for it. Maybe a cosmetic reject???

A friend of mine bought a naked ( no steering,seats,storage,motor,lights...)Carolina Skiff so he could customize it into the work boat that he wanted. Carolina Skiff I'm sure he saved a bunch or he wouldn't have done it that way.

Why not look for a 5 or 10 year old boat with broken motor, probably much cheaper.

I bought a new Alumacraft last year with no pre-rig. All you need to do is specify "no prerig" or specify the prerig for the engine you will install. No pre-rig gets you everything except the engine controls. Gauges, steering and electrics are all provided. Unless you plan to use an existing engine, you are probably better off buying the boat with a new or non-current engine to get a better price.

You can call or better yet, visit boat dealers and ask your question. If you visit in person they are more apt to take your question seriously.

Are you confident that the trailer and motor you have will be a good match for the boat you purchase?

I think the suggestion to look for a used boat with a blown motor was a good one.

Just checked with the guy that bought the Carolina Skiff and he said he ordered it this time of year and got it in april. He ordered a 17' semi v shell, steering, seats and hardware and assembeled it himself. The price was $4200.

Re: can i buy a new boat without the motor?

i have a early 1990's merc 90hp 3 cylinder and also a late 70's evinrude 115hp

i also have a 17' aluminum single axle trailer with new wheels, tirs, bearings and "wet" hubs.

i have lots of nearly new , in great condition equiptment. the hull i have now is falling apart and is too small for me to wanna rebuild it from the stringers up. its only a 16' center console. its ok if it were just me and a buddy, but usually its me, wife, daughter, dog(110 lb rotty) and some gear and maybe a friend or two, after all that, it gets real crowded, reall quick.

i wanted a NEW boat/hull cause i like the "no wood" construction, gelcoated interior, cup holders, new color opts, and all kinds of neat accs that come on the newer hulls.

ive contacted and found some aluminum boat builders who can give me a 18 foot center console with positive foam flotation and a "bare" hull for just about 4500 dollars.

the idea of the carolina skiff, i have entertained that one quite a bit, as we mostly boat in tampa bay and the surrounding intercoastal waterways, very rarely going out into the gulf at all. lots of island hopping.

thanks so much for everybodys ideas so far, they have been great.

mike

I am a dealer in Fort Pierce, Fl. I would be happy to sell you a hull only at a great price. I'll even help with the rigging and deliver it if needed. Thanks Jim www.topnotchmarine.com
