Re: 2001 johnson lower unit

Reading through some old posts here I did find a reference to a soft gear in a 2001 V-6. The way I got there was put "plug 150" into the search on this forum olny, match all terms, and subject only. In the case mentioned there he was given a better lower unit for free.

I put "2001 unit" in the search funtion of this forum and got 40 returns. Several of them seem to back up the soft gear claim.

Well if you are all still following, I met with bomb. rep today. they are going to give me a new lower unit. i was relieved to hear this. seems like bomb. is backing their name.

with new unit they will give me a 6 month warranty. i will try to give it a workout, time permitting.

i was thinking i would use it as much as possible, then just before the 6 months bring it in to dealer and have them check it out to make sure its not showing signs of failure.

what do you think? or maybe i should frequently change oil and look for shavings???

i am still a little nervous about it though. maybe i should try to trade it in once fixed? Do dealers take trade ins? any clue as to how much $ plus engine (assuming it looks like new, and it does)to get a new 150?

Thats great news, good for you! If a company stands behind their product like that why would you consuder changing? You think the imports are going to give you that level of service?

And if you are thinking about Merc. maybe you should visit that forum for a while and compare the quailty of the replies between the 2. I am not bashing Merc, I own 2 of em. There are at least 5 first rate OMC wrenchs that post here an a regular bases, some have even posted above, unfortunatly that is just not true in the other forum. If you are still unhappy maybe you should give up boating.

Re: 2001 johnson lower unit

I am very happy with bombardier's response. I am considerring replacing just because I have had 2 lower units go and i am nervous that i will have further problems in the future. As far as changing brands i am not ruling out getting a new johnson. they are now made under bombardier's control and they are doing the right thing here so i can't complain about them at all.

plus, i think the new ones have a 3 year warranty. i'm just wondering what it would cost me over and above my 2001 model to get new one with the 3 year warranty. i probably will stick with what i have, but i am kicking around some options.

finally, as far as this forum, you are 100% right there are some good guys posting here and I thank you all especially you, dhadley, and dj.

That gearcase should solve your problem. I finally found service bulletin about drive shaft bearing mounting, but dont think that was the problem with your gear case.
