1977 15 HP Johnson Shear Pin?

Hello

I recently procured a 1977 15hp johnson. I was checking it out getting it ready for this summer and I wanted to make sure I had extra shear pins for it just in case. Anyway, it appears to have an "exhaust" prop (?) on it and the service manual says it doesn't have a shear pin. Is this true? I made an attempt to take the prop off, but after I removed the nut, it didn't want to come off very easy and I don't want to break it. I thought maybe some "expert" on here could tell me...

Thanks

Re: 1977 15 HP Johnson Shear Pin?

If it has a "through hub" exhaust, it dosn't have a shear pin. The propellor hub holds it on and is pressure fitted to spin the prop. The rubber hub will also absorb shock to some degree. Gettin a prop off that hasn't been removed in a long time can be a problem. Try lots of penetrating oil down the prop shaft splines, let it soak and try some light hammer blows to loosen crud and use a pry bar to try to break it loose. Be patient as this can go for several days of repetition. You can put some heat on the end of the shaft, if all else fails. It dosn't help to put heat on the prop as the rubber hub insulates it. After you finally get it off, remember to remove it and grease the shaft every year.

Re: 1977 15 HP Johnson Shear Pin?

I just pulled the Prop on my newly acquired 1977 Johnson 15HP, must be a very popular year :).

As stated in the earlier post, no sheer pin, just make sure the thrust bearing (Washer at the back of the prop) and the retainer washer (front of prop) are in good shape and that the prop hub is not slipping (the hub has a rubber sleeve inside and absorbs impact, mostly like ok, mine was...once bad, it acts like a sheer "sheer pin and just spins).

That is my five cents, from a fellow new owner of a 1977Johnson 15hp
