Re: powerhead rebuild

Hello Oscar, I have sent my motor out. They appear to be taking longer than promised but I am trying to be patient. I had to pay before the would start the job. I was contacted on the May 6 saying they recieved it and it appeared to be a basic rebuild. I sent them payment on the 7th and expected they would complete the job around the 11th. I sent an e-mail inquiring on the 11th and they said it should take 2 or 3 days to finish and they would send me tracking info when they shipped. I have yet to hear from them again. I don't want to bug them but I am getting anxious so another e-mail is going out soon. The company is in Oklahoma and I am in Delaware so shipping will take about 4 days UPS ground. They include shipping charges in the $1475 price so I won't complain. I figure it to be $60 each way. They also include a carb rebuild or kits to do so. I chose to send the carbs with it. I keep hoping they shipped it already without contacting me and it will just show up at my job. I am anxious to tell all about the whole experience soon.

Yes, I did pay with a creditcard. I hope it does not come to that though.

Re: powerhead rebuild

Well I got it back Wednesday, not bad 2 weeks. They finished it and shipped without even telling me. They even sent me a new Clymers manual. Took today off so I guess I might as well put it back together. Hopefully I will be breaking it in by the weekend.

Re: powerhead rebuild

The cost was $1475. This included boring, new pistons, all new bearings, I sent along the carbs for rebuilding, they sent a new waterpump impeller and even a new Clymers manual. The only problem I encountered was from UPS being a little rough in delivery, which reminds me they paid for shipping both ways too. It came back packed in expanding foam but the carbs were not bolted on. They were wrapped in bubble wrap and foamed in on top of the motor. One had the fuel fitting broken off. I had another set of carbs so I used the bottom bowl from them to fix the problem rather than wait any longer. The motor seems to run great between 4000 and 5000 RPMs for break in. I did have a problem with the one carb flooding. It seems some rubber from the fuel lines is causing the needle not to seat so I have to work on that still.

BK'68 Glad you got your motor back running. What kind of break in instructions did they give you and what type of warranty.

Re: powerhead rebuild

They said to use 12 oz. of oil with 6 gal gas along with the VRO pump for 10 hours, run the motor at varying RPMs up to 75% during this time. At initial start up they said to run it up to operating temp and shut it off to retorque the head gaskets. I have run it at speeds from idle to fast idle and on plane from 4000 to 5000 so far. After 10 hours they say to check the plugs for even color and do a compression check. I figure it will take about 3 or 4 more trips to get 10 hours on it.

BK - How did the break-in go? My powerhead does need a rebuild and I shipped to these people yesterday. Sounds like a good deal.

Re: powerhead rebuild

The weather has not been with me for 2 weeks now so I still need more hours on break in. I did have a problem with one carb that I have swapped out with another. Maybe tomorrow after work I will get a couple more hours on it.

Re: powerhead rebuild

Hi Neighbor...I shipped on 6/3 and have been tracking it. They'll be receiving my powerhead today. I'm kind of torn because i'm ready to buy a bigger boat now but feel like I need to get the old one working to have any chance of selling it. I'll post on how the rebuild goes, especially if there are any problems.

Re: powerhead rebuild

Hello all... I was finally able to get out Tuesday night for an hour and she ran great. Changing the bottom carb out stopped my flooding problem. I still need a few more trips out to get the 10 hour break-in done but all seems well. My initial failure was from fuel contamination that I believe was from the tank vent fitting. I had a water seperator on but it was a solid filter that did not let you see the water building up. Luckily my work threw out a couple of Racor filters with the sight bowls on the bottom that let you see it happening. Now I can drain the bowl when I see water. I also moved my tank vent to stop it from taking on water. When the break-in is complete I want to work on my prop set up. I currently have a 13 1/4x17 but it seems to be a little slow to plane. I need to see what the RPM's top out at. I am seeing about 35 MPH at 4500 RPM with some throttle left. The boat is an 18' center console VIP that is fairly heavy. I am thinking I might need to drop to a 15 pitch unless my RPM's max out when I can go full throttle. I also think I will drill exhaust vents to see if my hole shot improves. Any thoughts on the prop will be appreciated.
